Commentary: Where familiar assumptions get turned inside-out to reveal what's actually happening
Here’s where I chase down the cultural contradictions, media hypocrisies, and lazy thinking that everyone notices but nobody wants to name. These pieces start with something we’re all supposed to accept without question (the latest marketing buzzword, a politician’s carefully crafted soundbite, or society’s newest emperor parading around in invisible clothes) and then ask the questions that make people squirm in their seats.
The goal isn’t to be contrary for sport, but to give fellow questioners permission to trust their instincts when something doesn’t quite add up. Whether I’m dissecting why most business advice treats symptoms rather than causes, or exploring how Adelaide’s cultural scene punches above its weight while pretending it doesn’t, each piece rewards curiosity rather than punishing it. Because in a world trying to numb us into passive consumption, the simple act of asking “but why?” becomes a form of intellectual rebellion disguised as weekend reading.
And as this photo with John Schumann and David Minnear should make clear, I don’t take myself too seriously. Well, I try not to!
