I’m taking you back to August of 1991 when I penned these words, originally with a lot of A minor and E minor on my acoustic guitar. I apologise to friends and family who had to endure those early performances.
As you might imagine, that playing skill didn’t let the song shine like it has today after I rethought its sound and style with The Virtualosos.
The song was an attempt to write an honest love song about accepting the joys of being in a relationship while also adapting to singledom and enjoying the virtues and pleasures in that state of being.
Some of the lyrics do sound a bit “indifferent” or even harsh, but they are meant to be said or thought or sung in earnest openness.
Interesting, about 15 years later, Tim Minchin created a song with that sort of world view, titled, If I Didn’t Have You. He did it with more pizazz, comedy, and mathematics.
Something out of the ordinary for me is that I started with the chorus because I believe it sets the mood and message of the song. It’s only a small thing but it is a quirk of this song. And it is one of my songs that makes me grin from ear to ear. I love its feel and energy.
And one last thing. You’ll see the original words for the bridge in are in the raw scratchings. I don’t know what I was doing in 1991 but the meter was all over the shop. Not that everything must be meter perfect (syllable count and the alignment of groups of syllables, line by line), but it was making it too hard for The Virtualosos to sing (and for me to listen to). So I modified them slightly, making the bridge a little stronger in the process, in my opinion.
I’m Someone Who Needs Someone Raw Scratchings

I’m Someone Who Needs Someone Lyrics
[Chorus]
I’m someone who needs someone
But that’s not to say
I need a someone, every single day
I enjoy my peace and solitude
When they’re my only friends
But I don’t mind the season
When their friendship ends
[Verse 1]
You look at me with eyes
That question my intent
But I never said
This love was heaven-sent
I hope it lasts a lifetime
But if it fades to grey
I’m sure we’ll both find someone
So just think of us today
[Chorus]
I’m someone who needs someone
But that’s not to say
I need a someone, every single day
I enjoy my peace and solitude
When they’re my only friends
But I don’t mind the season
When their friendship ends
[Verse 2]
We kiss in the moonlight
And we’re held in a trance
By the silhouette of lovers
Whose paths have crossed by chance
We may be soul mates
We may be riders of the storm
I’m sure the answer must be coming
So stay here and keep me warm
[Chorus]
I’m someone who needs someone
But that’s not to say
I need a someone, every single day
I enjoy my peace and solitude
When they’re my only friends
But I don’t mind the season
When their friendship ends
[Bridge]
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you’re a number
Don’t get me wrong, you could not have been another
Don’t get me wrong, I’m so glad you are my lover
Don’t get me wrong, I have no wish for another
[Chorus]
I’m someone who needs someone
But that’s not to say
I need a someone, every single day
I enjoy my peace and solitude
When they’re my only friends
But I don’t mind the season
When their friendship ends
