Of all the songs I’ve uploaded to music streaming services, this one is my guilty pleasure. It was written by a very young me in the early 90s but brought to life by my virtual session band.
I still can picture myself writing those words in Budapest in 1992.
Everything is dramatic in our early-to-mid 20s. We have just started getting a lid on our emotions and learned a few skills about regulation, but lurking under the surface is a tsunami of reaction, despair, fear, love, dread, etc. Well, it was for me.
What I remember about this one was that it “was complicated”. There were two main people at the heart of this, and there were some bit players, and their various interactions, needs, and decisions all swirled around in a cauldron of guilt; hot, dangerous, and brooding.
I added the refrain in 2025: Tomorrow I’ll be at peace And I’ll smile and then Someone will speak your name And the tears will start again. To me, that is the counterpoint that was running through my mind as I was writing the song.
Original Scribblings Of Tonight I Cry For You (With Original Chords For My Guitar)

Tonight I Cry For You Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Tonight I cry for you
My tears are for you to taste
For you they wash your body
For me they stain my face
[Verse 2]
Tonight I cleanse my heart
In the cauldron of my guilt
To you it’s just a fire
To me it’s calvary hill
[Refrain]
Tomorrow I’ll be at peace
And I’ll smile and then
Someone will speak your name
And the tears will start again
[Verse 3]
Tonight I call to you
Through the wine so lonely and sweet
To me you are but memory
To you I am obsolete
[Verse 4]
Tonight I see the truth
It stretches from shadow to star
You can no longer perceive me
I left no beacon or scar
[Refrain]
Tomorrow I’ll be at peace
And I’ll smile and then
Someone will speak your name
And the tears will start again
[Verse 5]
Tonight I cry for you
Though I can’t remember your face
You are to me but a memory
And now you return to your place
[Refrain]
Tomorrow I’ll be at peace
And I’ll smile and then
Someone will speak your name
And the tears will start again
